Tipperary singer's tough-to-make second album
Two long years in the making after a protracted bout of writers' block, Gemma Hayes's second album has much to live up to. 2002's Night On My Side (produced by Mercury Rev's Dave Fridmann) was an exquisitely woozy creation that conjured up images of a folk minstrel on hallucinogenic drugs. This successor is more straightforward and singer-songwriterly, but Hayes remains a bewitching performer whose twisted tales of melancholy come drenched in a Twin Peaks-like dream state.
